Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Sulayman al-Narsi narrated to us, Yahya ibn Ma'in narrated to us, Hisham ibn Yusuf narrated to us from Abdullah ibn Mus'ab, Musa ibn Uqba informed me who said: I heard Alqama ibn Waqqas who said: When Hadrat Talha (may Allah be well pleased with him), Hadrat al-Zubayr (may Allah be well pleased with him), and Umm al-Mu'minin Hadrat A'isha (may Allah be well pleased with her) set out seeking retribution for the blood of Hadrat Uthman (may Allah be well pleased with him), they reviewed their forces at Dhat Irq. They deemed Urwa ibn al-Zubayr and Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Hisham too young, so they sent them back. He said: I saw him, and the gatherings he preferred most were the emptiest ones. He was resting his chin upon his chest. I said to him: "O Abu Muhammad, I see that the gatherings you prefer most are the emptiest ones and you rest your chin upon your chest. If you dislike this day, then leave it, for no one is forcing you." He said: "O Alqama ibn Waqqas, do not blame me. We used to be one hand against all others. Now today we have become two mountains, one advancing against the other. But what I did regarding the affair of Uthman - I see no expiation for it except that my blood be shed in seeking retribution for his." I said: "Then why bring Muhammad ibn Talha when you have young children? Leave him, so that if something happens to you he can take care of your estate." He said: "He knows best. I dislike turning back anyone who has a sincere intention in this matter." So I spoke to Muhammad ibn Talha about staying behind, but he said: "I dislike asking travellers about my father."

ابو العباس محمد بن یعقوب نے ہمیں بیان کیا، ابراہیم بن سلیمان نرسی نے ہمیں بیان کیا، یحییٰ بن معین نے ہمیں بیان کیا، ہشام بن یوسف نے عبد اللہ بن مصعب سے، موسیٰ بن عقبہ نے مجھے خبر دی، فرمایا: میں نے علقمہ بن وقاص سے سنا، فرمایا: جب حضرت طلحہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ، حضرت زبیر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ اور اُمّ المؤمنین حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا حضرت عثمان رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے خون کا بدلہ لینے نکلے تو ذات عرق میں اپنے ساتھیوں کا جائزہ لیا۔ عروہ بن الزبیر اور ابو بکر بن عبد الرحمن بن الحارث بن ہشام کو چھوٹا سمجھ کر واپس کر دیا۔ فرمایا: میں نے انہیں (طلحہ کو) دیکھا اور ان کی پسندیدہ مجلس سب سے خلوت والی تھی اور وہ اپنی ٹھوڑی سینے پر رکھے بیٹھے تھے۔ میں نے عرض کیا: اے ابو محمد! میں دیکھ رہا ہوں آپ سب سے خلوت مجلس پسند کرتے ہیں اور اپنی ٹھوڑی سینے پر رکھے ہیں۔ اگر آپ کو یہ دن ناپسند ہے تو چھوڑ دیجیے کوئی آپ کو مجبور نہیں کر رہا۔ فرمایا: «اے علقمہ بن وقاص! مجھے ملامت نہ کرو۔ ہم سب کے خلاف ایک ہاتھ تھے اور آج دو پہاڑ ہو گئے ہیں جو ایک دوسرے کی طرف بڑھ رہے ہیں۔ لیکن عثمان کے معاملے میں مجھ سے جو کچھ ہوا اس کا کفارہ میری نظر میں یہی ہے کہ ان کے خون کے بدلے میرا خون بہے۔» میں نے کہا: پھر محمد بن طلحہ کو کیوں لائے ہیں آپ کے چھوٹے بچے ہیں، انہیں چھوڑ دیجیے اگر کچھ ہوا تو آپ کی جائیداد سنبھالیں؟ فرمایا: وہ بہتر جانتا ہے، مجھے ناپسند ہے کہ جس کی اس کام میں نیت ہو اسے واپس کروں۔ میں نے محمد بن طلحہ سے پیچھے رہنے کی بات کی تو انہوں نے کہا: مجھے ناپسند ہے کہ مسافروں سے اپنے والد کی خبر پوچھوں۔
