حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مِهْرَانُ بْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى عَنْ أَبِي النُّعْمَانِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْوَقَّاصِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي سَلْمَانُ الْفَارِسِيُّ قَالَ دَخَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ مِنْ خِلَالِ الْمُنَافِقِ إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِن�� خَانَ فَخَرَجَا مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُمَا ثَقِيلَانِ فَلَقِيَهُمَا عَلِيُّ فَقَالَ لَهُمَا مَا لِي أَرَاكُمَا ثَقِيلَيْنِ قَالَا حَدِيثًا سَمِعْنَاهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ خِلَالِ الْمُنَافِقِ إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ فَقَالَ عَلِيُّ أَفَلَا سَأَلْتُمَاهُ فَقَالَا هِبْنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَكِنِّي سَأَسْأَلُهُ فَدَخَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ لَقِيَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ وَهُمَا ثَقِيلَانِ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ مَا قَالَا فَقَالَ قَدْ حَدَّثْتُهُمَا وَلَمْ أَضَعْهُ عَلَى الْمَوْضِعِ الَّذِي يَضَعُونَهُ وَلَكِنِ الْمُنَافِقُ الَّذِي إِذَا حَدَّثَ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَهُ أَنَّهُ يُكَذِّبُ وَإِذَا وَعَدَ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَهُ أَنَّهُ يُخْلِفُ وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَهُ أَنَّهُ يَخُونُ

Yusuf ibn Musa narrated to us, he said: Mihran ibn Abi 'Umar informed us, he said: 'Ali ibn 'Abd al-A'la informed us, from Abu al-Nu'man, he said: Abu al-Waqqas narrated to me, he said: Salman al-Farisi narrated to me, he said: Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: 'Among the traits of a hypocrite: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays.' They left the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) feeling heavy-hearted. 'Ali met them and said: 'Why do I see you heavy-hearted?' They said: 'A hadith we heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Among the traits of a hypocrite - when he speaks, he lies; when he is entrusted, he betrays; and when he promises, he breaks his promise.' 'Ali said: 'Why did you not ask him (to explain)?' They said: 'We were in awe of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).' He said: 'But I will ask him.' So he entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'Abu Bakr and 'Umar met me heavy-hearted,' and he mentioned what they said. The Prophet said: 'I told them, but I did not place it in the context they understood. Rather, the hypocrite is one who, when he speaks, he speaks while intending in his heart to lie; and when he promises, he promises while intending to break it; and when he is entrusted, he accepts while intending to betray.'
