Kuraib reported that Umm al-Fadl sent him to Mu'awiya in Sham. He said: I arrived in Sham and fulfilled her need. The crescent of Ramadan was sighted while I was in Sham. I saw the crescent on Friday night. Then I came to Medina at the end of the month. Ibn 'Abbas asked me about the crescent and said: 'When did you see it?' I said: 'Friday night.' He said: 'Did you see it yourself?' I said: 'Yes, and the people saw it, and they fasted and Mu'awiya fasted.' He said: 'But we saw it on Saturday night, and we will continue to fast until we complete thirty or see it.' I said: 'Is not the sighting of Mu'awiya and his fasting sufficient for you?' He said: 'No, this is how the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded us.'
