Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Rudhbari informed us, Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Ahmad ibn Shawdhab narrated to us in Wasit, Shu'ayb ibn Ayyub narrated to us. And Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan the judge informed us, Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Duhaym informed us, Ahmad ibn Hazim informed us, Ubayd Allah ibn Musa informed us, Isra'il informed us from Ishaq from Shurayh ibn al-Nu'man from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to inspect the eyes and ears, and not to sacrifice an animal with a muqabalah (tip of ear cut), nor mudabarah (back of ear cut), nor sharqa' (ear slit), nor kharqa' (ear pierced). He said: The muqabalah is one whose ear tip is cut, the mudabarah is one cut from the side of the ear, the sharqa' is the one with a split ear, and the kharqa' is the one with pierced ears. He said: "The back of the ear is cut." I said: "What is sharqa'?" He said: "The ear is slit." I said: "What is kharqa'?" He said: "The branding mark pierces the ear."
