Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us, from Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar, from Ubayd ibn Sharik, from Muhammad ibn Wahb, from Baqiyyah; and Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu Ahmad Bakr ibn Ahmad al-Sayrafi in Marw, from Abu al-Ahwas Muhammad ibn al-Haytham al-Qadi, from Haywah ibn Shurayh al-Hadrami, from Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid, from Bahir ibn Sa'd, from Khalid ibn Ma'dan, from Abu Bahriyyah, from Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) who said: Military expeditions are of two types. As for one who seeks the face of Allah the Almighty, obeys the leader, spends his precious wealth, treats his companion well, and avoids corruption — his sleep and wakefulness are all rewarded. As for one who fights out of pride, showing off, and seeking reputation, disobeys the leader, and spreads corruption in the land — he will not return with anything at all. This is the wording of al-Hadrami's narration. In the narration of Muhammad ibn Wahb, he said: From Abu Bahriyyah Abdullah ibn Qays, and at the end he said: And disobeyed the leader and did not spend his precious wealth — he will not return with anything at all.
