Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us, from Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar, from Ubayd ibn Sharik, from Abu al-Jamahir, from al-Haytham ibn Humayd, from al-Ala' ibn al-Harith, from al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: Permit me to commit fornication. Those near the Prophet (peace be upon him) were about to seize him, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Leave him. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: Come closer. Would you like that to be done to your sister? He said: No. He said: What about your daughter? He said: No. He kept mentioning relatives, and each time the man said: No. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Then dislike what Allah dislikes, and love for your brother what you love for yourself. The man said: O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me hate women. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: O Allah, make him hate women. The man left, then returned after some nights and said: O Messenger of Allah, nothing is more hateful to me than women, so permit me to wander the land in devotion. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The wandering devotion of my nation is jihad in the cause of Allah.
