Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu al-Fadl ibn Ibrahim, from Ahmad ibn Salamah, from Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, from Abu Amir al-Aqadi, from Ikrimah ibn Ammar al-Yamami, from Iyas ibn Salamah, from his father who said: We went on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) — and he mentioned the lengthy hadith — including when the enemy raided the Prophet's herd of camels. He said: I climbed a hill, faced Madinah, and cried out three times: Ya sabahah! (An alarm call.) Then I pursued them, shooting arrows and chanting: I am the son of al-Akwa', and today is a day for the young ones! And regarding the march to Khaybar, his uncle Amir chanted: By Allah, were it not for Allah, we would not have been guided, nor would we have given charity, nor prayed. We are never free from need of Your bounty. So keep our feet firm when we meet the enemy, and send down tranquility upon us. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: Who is this? They said: Amir. He said: May your Lord forgive you. When they reached Khaybar, Marhab came forth brandishing his sword, chanting: Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, fully armed, a proven warrior, when wars blaze up. Amir came out to face him, chanting in response. Then the hadith mentions Amir's sword rebounding on himself, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) coming out, reciting war poetry, and killing Marhab — as previously mentioned.
