Qutaybah narrated to us, Ya'qub ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad, meaning al-Qari, narrated to us, from Amr ibn Abi Amr, from al-Muttalib, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The Prophet Dawud (David) was extremely jealous. When he went out, the doors would be locked and no one could enter upon his family until he returned. One day he went out and the house was locked. His wife looked toward the courtyard and saw a man standing in the middle of it. She said to those in the house: 'Where did this man come from while the house is locked? By Allah, you will be put to shame before Dawud.' Then Dawud came and found the man standing in the middle of the courtyard. He said to him: 'Who are you?' He said: 'I am the one who does not fear kings and from whom nothing is withheld.' Dawud said: 'By Allah, you are the Angel of Death. Welcome to the command of Allah.' Then Dawud remained in his place where his soul was taken until his affair was finished, and the sun rose upon him. Sulayman (Solomon) said to the birds: 'Shade Dawud.' So the birds shaded him until the earth darkened over them. Then Sulayman said to them: 'Fold in wing by wing.' Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was showing us how the birds did it, and he clenched his hand - and on that day, people from al-Masrakhiyyah overwhelmed him."
