حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ أَخْبَرَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو أَنَّ الْيَهُودَ أَتَتْ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ وَقَالُوا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ { لَوْلَا يُعَذِّبُنَا اللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ } فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ { وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللَّهُ فَقَرَأَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ فَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ }.

Affan told us: Hammad told us: Ata ibn al-Sa'ib informed us, from his father, from Abdullah ibn Amr, that the Jews came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: Death be upon you - and said among themselves: Why does Allah not punish us for what we say? So Allah, mighty and majestic is He, revealed: And when they come to you, they greet you with a greeting Allah has not greeted you with - and he recited up to His words: and evil is the destination.
