Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us, Shu'bah told us, from Thabit: I asked Ibn Umar about nabidh made in earthenware jars, whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it. He said: "They have claimed that." I said: "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid it?" He said: "They have claimed that." I said: "Did you hear it from him yourself?" He said: "They have claimed that" - and Allah turned that away from me - and whenever it was said to anyone: "Did you hear it yourself?" he would get angry and be about to quarrel with him.
