حَدَّثَنَا عَبِيدَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ فَقَالَ دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ عَلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ يَا ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ لَقَدْ ذَكَرْتَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ وَقَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ أُنَاسًا يُصَلُّونَهَا وَلَمْ نَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّاهُمَا وَلَا أَمَرَ بِهِمَا قَالَ فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ذَاكَ مَا يَقْضِي النَّاسَ بِهِ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ فَجَاءَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ فَقَالَ مَا رَكْعَتَانِ قَضَى بِهِمَا النَّاسُ فَقَالَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكِ السَّلَامَ وَيَقُولُ مَا رَكْعَتَانِ زَعَمَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ أَنَّكِ أَمَرْتِيهِ بِهِمَا بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ قَالَ فَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ ذَاكَ مَا أَخْبَرَتْهُ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَى أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ فَأَخْبَرْنَاهَا مَا قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ فَقَالَتْ يَرْحَمُهَا اللَّهُ أَوَلَمْ أُخْبِرْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ نَهَى عَنْهُمَا حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَمْعَةَ عَنْ أُمِّهِ زَيْنَبَ ابْنَةِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ وَعَنْ أَبِيهِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَمْعَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَتْ كَانَتْ لَيْلَتِي الَّتِي يَصِيرُ إِلَيَّ فِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَى حَدِيثِ ابْنِ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ أَوَلَا يَشُدُّ لَكَ هَذَا الْأَثَرُ إِفَاضَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ يَوْمِهِ ذَلِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُمْسِيَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ رُومَانَ عَنْ خَالِدٍ مَوْلَى الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي زَيْنَبُ ابْنَةُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أُمِّهَا أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ.

Narrated to us by 'Abidah, who said: Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad narrated to me, from Abdullah ibn al-Harith, who said: I asked him about the two rak'ahs after 'Asr. He said: "Abdullah ibn Abbas and I went in to see Mu'awiyah. Mu'awiyah said: 'O Ibn Abbas, you mentioned two rak'ahs after 'Asr, and it has reached me that people are praying them, yet we never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pray them, nor did he command them.'" He said: "Ibn Abbas said, 'That is what Ibn al-Zubayr is having people practice.'" He said: "So Ibn al-Zubayr came, and [Mu'awiyah] said, 'What are these two rak'ahs that you are having people practice?' Ibn al-Zubayr said, 'A'ishah told me this, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).'" He said: "So he sent two men to A'ishah, [saying]: 'The Commander of the Faithful conveys his greetings of peace to you and says: What are the two rak'ahs that Ibn al-Zubayr claims you commanded him to pray after 'Asr?'" He said: "A'ishah said, 'That is what Umm Salamah informed him.'" He said: "So we went in to see Umm Salamah and told her what A'ishah had said. She said, 'May Allah have mercy on her - did I not inform her that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden them?'" [Also] narrated to us by Ya'qub, who said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Abu 'Ubaydah ibn Abdullah ibn Zam'ah narrated to me, from his mother Zaynab bint Abi Salamah, and from his father Abdullah ibn Zam'ah, from Umm Salamah, wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "It was my night, the one on which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to me" - and he mentioned the meaning of the hadith of Ibn Abi 'Adi. Abu 'Ubaydah said: "Does this report not support that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed on that very day before evening?" [Also] narrated to us by Ya'qub, who said: My father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me, from Yazid ibn Ruman, from Khalid, the mawla of al-Zubayr ibn Nawfal, who said: Zaynab bint Abi Salamah narrated to me, from her mother Umm Salamah, this hadith.
