Ya'qub told us: My father told us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr told me, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, from Aisha, Mother of the Believers, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, divided the captives of Banu al-Mustaliq, Juwayriyyah bint al-Harith fell by lot to Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas, or to a cousin of his, and she made a contract with him to purchase her freedom. She was a sweet, charming woman - no one saw her without being captivated. So she came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seeking his help with her contract. She said: By Allah, as soon as I saw her at the door of my chamber, I disliked her, for I knew he would see in her what I had seen. She went in to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am Juwayriyyah bint al-Harith ibn Abi Dirar, chief of his people, and I have been afflicted with what is not hidden from you. I fell by lot to Thabit ibn Qays ibn al-Shammas, or to a cousin of his, and I made a contract with him to purchase my freedom, so I have come to you seeking your help with my contract." He said, "Would you like something better than that?" She said, "What is it, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "I will pay off your contract and marry you." She said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "I have done so." She said: The news went out to the people that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had married Juwayriyyah bint al-Harith, and the people said, "In-laws of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him!" so they released what captives of her tribe they held. She said: By his marrying her, a hundred households of Banu al-Mustaliq were freed. I do not know of any woman who was a greater blessing to her people than she was.
