Aisha continued: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), whenever he passed by my door, would say a word by which Allah would benefit. One day he passed and did not say anything. Then he passed again and did not say anything, two or three times. I said: "O servant girl, put a cushion for me at the door," and I wrapped my head. He passed by me and said: "O Aisha, what is the matter with you?" I said: "I have a headache." He said: "Rather, it is I who says: O my head!" He left but did not stay long before he was brought back carried in a garment. He entered upon me and sent word to his wives saying: "I have fallen ill and I cannot make my rounds among you, so give me permission to stay with Aisha." They gave him permission. He stayed with me. Then one day while his head was on my shoulder, his head tilted toward mine. I thought he wanted something from my head, but a cold drop fell from his mouth onto my collarbone, and my skin shivered. I thought he had fainted, so I covered him with a cloth. Umar and al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah came and asked permission. I allowed them in and drew the curtain. Umar looked at him and said: "How severe is this fainting of the Messenger of Allah!" Then they stood up. When they neared the door, al-Mughirah said: "O Umar, the Messenger of Allah has died." Umar said: "You lie! You are a man driven by fitnah. The Messenger of Allah will not die until Allah destroys the hypocrites." Then Abu Bakr came. I lifted the curtain, and he looked at him and said: "Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. The Messenger of Allah has died." He went to his head, lowered his jaw, kissed his forehead, and said: "O my Prophet!" Then he raised his head, lowered his jaw again, kissed his forehead, and said: "O my chosen one!" Then he raised his head, lowered his jaw, kissed his forehead, and said: "O my intimate friend! The Messenger of Allah has died." He went out to the mosque while Umar was addressing the people, saying the Messenger of Allah would not die until Allah destroyed the hypocrites. Abu Bakr spoke, praised and glorified Allah, and said: "Indeed, Allah the Almighty says: 'Indeed, you will die, and indeed, they will die,' until he finished the verse, and: 'Muhammad is not but a messenger. Other messengers have passed on before him. So if he dies or is killed, would you turn back on your heels?' until he finished the verse. Whoever used to worship Allah, then Allah is Ever-Living. And whoever used to worship Muhammad, then Muhammad has died." Umar said: "Indeed it is in the Book of Allah! I did not realize it was in the Book of Allah." Then Umar said: "O people, this is Abu Bakr, the elder of the Muslims, so pledge allegiance to him." And they pledged allegiance.
