Yazid narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Amr informed us, from his father, from his grandfather Alqamah ibn Waqqas, who said: A'ishah informed me, saying: "I went out on the day of the Trench, following the tracks of the people." She said: "Then I heard the tread of the earth behind me" - meaning the sound of footsteps on the ground - "so I turned, and there was Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, with his nephew al-Harith ibn Aws accompanying him, carrying his shield." She said: "So I sat down on the ground, and Sa'd passed by, wearing an iron coat of mail from which his limbs protruded - I feared for Sa'd's exposed limbs." She said: "Sa'd was one of the largest and tallest of men." She said: "He passed by reciting rajaz verse, saying: 'Would that a little more time might witness the battle... how fine is death when the appointed time has come.'" She said: "So I got up and slipped into a garden, and there were a group of Muslims in it, among them Umar ibn al-Khattab, and among them a man wearing a helmet, and Umar said: 'What brought you here? By my life, by Allah, you are indeed bold! What assures you that there might not be calamity or a rout?'" She said: "He kept blaming me until I wished the earth would split open for me at that moment so I could enter into it." She said: "Then the man raised the helmet from his face, and there was Talhah ibn Ubaydullah, and he said: 'O Umar, woe to you, you have said much today - and where is the rout or fleeing except to Allah, Mighty and Sublime?'" She said: "And a man from the polytheists of Quraysh, called Ibn al-Ariqah, shot an arrow at Sa'd, saying: 'Take this - I am Ibn al-Ariqah' - and it struck his medial arm vein and severed it. Sa'd then supplicated Allah, Mighty and Sublime, saying: 'O Allah, if You have preserved for Your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, any remaining war with Quraysh, then preserve me for it; and if You have ended the war between him and them, then take my soul to You.'" She said: "And they [Banu Qurayzah] were his allies and clients in the Age of Ignorance." She said: "So his wound closed up, and Allah, Mighty and Sublime, sent the wind against the polytheists, and Allah, Mighty and Sublime, spared the believers the fighting, and Allah, Mighty and Sublime, was ever powerful and mighty. So Abu Sufyan and those with him withdrew to Tihamah, and Uyaynah ibn Badr and those with him withdrew to Najd, and Banu Qurayzah returned and fortified themselves in their strongholds, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, returned to Madinah and laid down his weapons, and ordered a leather tent to be pitched, and it was pitched over Sa'd in the mosque." She said: "Then Gabriel, peace be upon him, came to him, with the dust of battle still upon his front teeth, and said: 'Have you laid down your weapons? By Allah, the angels have not yet laid down their weapons! Go out to Banu Qurayzah and fight them.'" She said: "So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, put on his armor and had it announced among the people to set out, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out and passed by Banu Ghanm, who were the neighbors of the mosque around it, and he said: 'Who passed by you?' They said: 'Dihyah al-Kalbi passed by us' - and Dihyah al-Kalbi's beard, age, and face resembled Gabriel, peace be upon him." She said: "So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to them and besieged them for twenty-five nights. When the siege grew intense upon them and the hardship grew severe, it was said to them: 'Come down to the judgment of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.' So they consulted Abu Lubabah ibn Abd al-Mundhir, and he signaled to them that it meant slaughter. They said: 'We will come down to the judgment of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh.' The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Come down to the judgment of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh.' So they came down, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent for Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, and he was brought on a donkey with a saddle of palm fiber, having been placed upon it, with his people surrounding him. They said: 'O Abu Amr, your allies and your clients, and the people of past benefit, and those whom you know.'" She said: "And he did not return anything to them, nor turn to them at all, until, when he drew near their dwellings, he turned to his people and said: 'The time has come for me not to fear, in the cause of Allah, the blame of any blamer.'" [Abu Sa'id said:] "So when he came upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he said: 'Rise for your master and bring him down.' Umar said: 'Our master is Allah, Mighty and Sublime.' He said: 'Bring him down,' so they brought him down. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Pass judgment concerning them.' Sa'd said: 'Then I judge concerning them that their fighting men be killed, their offspring taken captive, and their wealth divided' - and Yazid said, in Baghdad, 'and distributed' - The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'You have indeed judged concerning them with the judgment of Allah, Mighty and Sublime, and the judgment of His Messenger.'" She said: "Then Sa'd supplicated, saying: 'O Allah, if You have kept remaining for Your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, anything of the war with Quraysh, then keep me alive for it; and if You have ended the war between him and them, then take my soul to You.'" She said: "So his wound burst open again - though it had healed until nothing of it could be seen but something like a small scab - and he returned to his tent, which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had pitched over him." A'ishah said: "So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Abu Bakr, and Umar attended him." She said: "By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I could indeed distinguish the weeping of Umar from the weeping of Abu Bakr, while I was in my chamber; and they were, as Allah, Mighty and Sublime, said, {'Merciful among themselves'}." Alqamah said: "I said: 'O Mother, how then did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, behave [at such times]?' She said: 'His eye never shed tears for anyone, but when he was moved [with grief], he would take hold of his beard.'"
