Ya'qub told us, my father told us, from Muhammad b. Ishaq, Yazid b. Ziyad told me, from Muhammad b. Ka'b al-Qurazi, he said: A young man of ours from the people of Kufah said to Hudhayfah b. al-Yaman: "O Abu 'Abdullah, did you see the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and accompany him?" He said: "Yes, O son of my brother." He said: "How did you act?" He said: "By God, we indeed strove hard." He said: "By God, had we found him, we would not have let him walk on the ground; we would have carried him on our shoulders." Hudhayfah said: "O son of my brother, by God, I remember us with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) at the Trench; the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed a good portion of the night, then turned to us and said: 'Who is a man who will get up and look for us to see what the enemy is doing?' - the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) stipulating for him, on condition that he return, that God would admit him to Paradise - but no man got up. Then the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed another good portion of the night, then turned to us and said: 'Who is a man who will get up and look for us to see what the enemy is doing, then return?' - the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) stipulating for him the return: 'I ask God that he be my companion in Paradise' - but no man among the people got up, given the intensity of the fear, the intensity of the hunger, and the intensity of the cold. When no one got up, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) called me, and I had no choice but to get up when he called me. He said: 'O Hudhayfah, go and enter among the enemy and see what they are doing, and do not do anything until you come back to us.'" He said: "So I went and entered among the people, while the wind and the armies of God were doing what they were doing - no cooking-pot of theirs would stay steady, nor fire, nor tent. Abu Sufyan b. Harb stood up and said: 'O company of Quraysh, let each man look to see who is sitting beside him.'" Hudhayfah said: "So I took hold of the hand of the man next to me and said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'I am so-and-so son of so-and-so.'" Then Abu Sufyan said: "O company of Quraysh, by God you are not in a place to remain; the horses have perished, Banu Qurayzah have betrayed us and we have received from them what we dislike, and we have met from this wind what you see; by God, no cooking-pot stays steady for us, no fire stays lit for us, and no tent stays standing for us, so depart, for I am departing." Then he went to his camel, which was hobbled, and sat on it, then struck it, and it leapt up on three legs before he had even released its hobble, and it was already standing. "Had it not been for the covenant of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), 'Do not do anything until you come back to me,' and had I wished, I could have killed him with an arrow." Hudhayfah said: "Then I returned to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), who was standing praying, wrapped in a garment belonging to one of his wives. When he saw me, he brought me into his cloak and threw the end of the garment over me, then he bowed and prostrated while still in it. When he finished the prayer, I told him the news, and Ghatafan heard what Quraysh had done and hurried off to their own lands."
