Husayn ibn Muhammad told us: Khalaf, that is Ibn Khalifah, told us, from Abu Janab, from Sulayman ibn Buraydah, from his father: that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, undertook the expedition of the Conquest, and went out walking to the graves until, when he reached the nearest of them, he sat by it as though he were speaking to someone sitting there, weeping. Umar ibn al-Khattab met him and said: What makes you weep, may Allah make me a ransom for you? He said: I asked my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, to permit me to visit the grave of the mother of Muhammad, and He permitted me; then I asked Him to permit me to seek forgiveness for her, but He refused. I had forbidden you three things: the meat of sacrificial animals, that you should keep it after three days - now eat whatever seems good to you; and visiting graves - whoever wishes may visit, for I have been given permission to visit the grave of the mother of Muhammad, and whoever wishes may leave it; and the vessels in which you drank nabidh, the gourd, the tarred vessel, and the green pitcher - I commanded you to use certain vessels, but the vessel makes nothing lawful or unlawful, so avoid every intoxicant.
