حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ لَهِيعَةَ عَنْ زُهْرَةَ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ عَنْ جَدِّهِ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِيَدِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ فَقَالَ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَأَنْتَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا نَفْسِي فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى أَكُونَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ قَالَ فَأَنْتَ الْآنَ وَاللَّهِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ نَفْسِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْآنَ يَا عُمَرُ.

Qutayba ibn Sa'id told us, Ibn Lahi'a told us, from Zuhra ibn Ma'bad, from his grandfather, who said: We were with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was holding the hand of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, and he (Umar) said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, you are dearer to me than everything except my own self." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "By Him in whose hand is my soul, none of you truly believes until I am dearer to him than his own self." He said: So he (Umar) said, "Then now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than my own self." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Now, O Umar."
