Yazid ibn Harun told us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasar informed us, from al-Zuhri, Muhammad ibn Muslim ibn Shihab, from 'Urwa ibn al-Zubayr, from al-Miswar ibn Makhrama and Marwan ibn al-Hakam, who both said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out in the year of al-Hudaybiyyah intending to visit the House, not intending to fight, and he drove along with him seventy sacrificial camels, and the people numbered seven hundred men, so each camel was on behalf of ten men. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out until, when he was at 'Usfan, Bishr ibn Sufyan al-Ka'bi met him and said: O Messenger of Allah, this is Quraysh — they have heard of your march, so they have gone out with their milk-nursing she-camels, wearing the skins of leopards, swearing to Allah that you shall never enter it upon them by force. And here is Khalid ibn al-Walid with their cavalry; they have arrived at Kura' al-Ghamim. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Woe to Quraysh, war has consumed them! What harm would it do them if they left me and the rest of the people alone? If they overcome me, that is what they wanted; and if Allah grants me victory over them, they will enter Islam in full number; and if they do not do so, they will fight while they still have strength — so what does Quraysh think? By Allah, I will not cease to strive for that which Allah sent me for, until Allah makes it prevail, or this neck of mine is severed." Then he ordered the people, and they took the way to the right, between the tracts of the hamd plants, on a route that would bring him out at Thaniyyat al-Murar and al-Hudaybiyyah, below Mecca. He said: He led the army along that route. When the cavalry of Quraysh saw the dust of the army's march and that they had diverged from their road, they turned back retreating to Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went on until, when he took the path of Thaniyyat al-Murar, his she-camel knelt down. The people said: "She has balked!" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "She has not balked, and that is not her nature, but the One who restrained the elephant from Mecca has restrained her. By Allah, Quraysh will not ask me today for any matter in which they seek the ties of kinship, except that I will grant it to them." Then he said to the people: "Dismount." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, there is no water in the valley for the people to camp by." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took an arrow out of his quiver and gave it to a man from among his companions, who went down into one of the wells there and planted it in it, and the water gushed forth abundantly until the people drew from it to their satisfaction. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had settled, suddenly Budayl ibn Warqa' came with men from Khuza'ah, and he said to them the same as he had said to Bishr ibn Sufyan. So they returned to Quraysh and said: "O assembly of Quraysh, you are being hasty against Muhammad. Muhammad has not come to fight; he has only come as a visitor to this House, honoring its sanctity." But they accused them of collusion. Muhammad — meaning Ibn Ishaq — said: al-Zuhri said: Khuza'ah, in the absence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, both its Muslims and its polytheists, would not conceal anything happening in Mecca from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. They said: "Even if he has only come for that, by Allah he shall never enter it upon us by force, nor shall the Arabs ever speak of that." Then they sent to him Mikraz ibn Hafs ibn al-Akhyaf, one of Banu 'Amir ibn Lu'ayy. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw him, he said: "This is a treacherous man." When he reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke to him in the same way he had spoken to his companions. Then he returned to Quraysh and told them what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had said to him. He said: Then they sent to him al-Hulays ibn 'Alqama al-Kinani, who was at that time the chief of the Ahabish. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw him, he said: "This is one of a people who venerate sacred things — send the sacrificial animals out toward him." So they sent out the sacrificial animals. When he saw the sacrificial animals streaming toward him from across the valley in their garlands, having worn away their tendons from being held so long from reaching their place of sacrifice, he returned without reaching the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, out of reverence for what he had seen, and said: "O assembly of Quraysh, I have seen something it is not lawful to turn away — the sacrificial animals in their garlands, having worn away their tendons from being held so long from their place of sacrifice." They said: "Sit down, you are only a Bedouin, you have no knowledge." Then they sent to him 'Urwa ibn Mas'ud al-Thaqafi. He said: "O assembly of Quraysh, I have seen what happens to those you send to Muhammad, when he comes to you, of harsh rebuke and foul speech; and you know that you are like a father to me and I am like a son to you; and I have heard of what has befallen you, so I gathered those of my people who obeyed me, then I came to stand with you in person." They said: "You have spoken truly; you are not suspected by us." So he went out until he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and sat before him, and said: "O Muhammad, you have gathered a rabble of people, then brought them against your own kin to break them apart! This is Quraysh — they have gone out with their milk-nursing she-camels, wearing the skins of leopards, swearing to Allah that you shall never enter it upon them by force. And by Allah, it is as though I can already see these people deserting you tomorrow." He said: And Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, was sitting behind the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: "Suck on the private part of al-Lat! Shall we desert him?" He said: "Who is this, O Muhammad?" He said: "This is the son of Abu Quhafa." He said: "By Allah, were it not for a favor you did me that I have not yet repaid, I would answer you for this." Then he reached out and took hold of the beard of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba was standing at the head of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in armor. He struck his hand and said: "Take your hand away from the beard of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, before — by Allah — it does not reach you again." He said: "Woe to you, how harsh and coarse you are!" Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, smiled. He said: "Who is this, O Muhammad?" He said: "This is your nephew, al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba." He said: "You traitor! Was it only yesterday that you washed off your disgrace?" He said: Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke to him just as he had spoken to his companions, informing him that he had not come intending war. He said: Then he got up from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, having seen what his companions did for him — he did not perform ablution without them rushing to take the water, nor did he spit without them rushing to take it, nor did any of his hair fall without them taking it. So he returned to Quraysh and said: "O assembly of Quraysh, I have been to Chosroes in his kingdom, and to Caesar and the Negus in their kingdoms; by Allah, I have never seen a king among a people like Muhammad among his companions. And I have seen a people who will never abandon him for anything — so consider your judgment well." He said: And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had earlier sent Khirash ibn Umayya al-Khuza'i to Mecca, mounted on a camel of his called al-Tha'lab. When he entered Mecca, Quraysh hamstrung it and wanted to kill Khirash, but the Ahabish prevented them, until he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. So he called 'Umar to send him to Mecca, but 'Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, I fear Quraysh for myself, and there is none of Banu 'Adi there to protect me, and Quraysh know my enmity toward them and my harshness against them; but I shall direct you to a man more honored than I — 'Uthman ibn 'Affan." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called him and sent him to Quraysh to tell them that he had not come for war, and that he had come only as a visitor to this House, honoring its sanctity. So 'Uthman set out until he came to Mecca, and Aban ibn Sa'id ibn al-'As met him, dismounted from his mount, carried him before him and behind him, and gave him protection until he delivered the message of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Then 'Uthman went on until he came to Abu Sufyan and the chief men of Quraysh, and conveyed to them what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had sent him with. They said to 'Uthman: "If you wish to circumambulate the House, do so." He said: "I would not do that until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, circumambulates it." He said: Then Quraysh detained him with them, and it reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Muslims that 'Uthman had been killed. Muhammad said: al-Zuhri told me that Quraysh sent Suhayl ibn 'Amr, one of Banu 'Amir ibn Lu'ayy, saying: "Go to Muhammad and make peace with him, but there shall be nothing in his peace except that he returns from us this year — for by Allah, the Arabs shall never say that he entered it upon us by force." So Suhayl ibn 'Amr came to him. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saw him, he said: "The people intend peace, since they have sent this man." When he reached the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, they spoke together and prolonged the discussion, going back and forth, until a peace agreement was reached between them. When the matter was settled and nothing remained but the writing, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab jumped up and went to Abu Bakr and said: "O Abu Bakr, is he not the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? Are we not the Muslims? Are they not the polytheists?" He said: "Yes indeed." He said: "Then why should we give abasement in our religion?" Abu Bakr said: "O 'Umar, hold fast to his stirrup wherever it goes, for I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah." 'Umar said: "And I bear witness too." Then he went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, are we not the Muslims? Are they not the polytheists?" He said: "Yes indeed." He said: "Then why should we give abasement in our religion?" He said: "I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger; I will never disobey His command, and He will never let me be lost." 'Umar then said: "I did not cease to fast, give charity, pray, and free slaves because of what I did, out of fear because of what I said that day, until I hoped it would turn out to be good." He said: And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called 'Ali ibn Abi Talib and said to him: "Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." Suhayl ibn 'Amr said: "I do not recognize this; rather write: In Your name, O Allah." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "Write: In Your name, O Allah. This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed with Suhayl ibn 'Amr." Suhayl ibn 'Amr said: "If I bore witness that you are the Messenger of Allah, I would not have fought you; but write: This is what Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah and Suhayl ibn 'Amr have agreed upon — to lay down war for ten years, during which people shall be secure, and each shall restrain themselves from the other; on condition that whoever comes to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, from among his companions without the permission of his guardian, he shall return him to them; and whoever from among those with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, comes to Quraysh, they shall not return him to him; and that between us there is an unopened satchel, and that there shall be no stealthy taking away nor treachery." And it was among their stipulation, when they wrote the document, that whoever wished to enter into the bond and covenant of Muhammad might do so, and whoever wished to enter into the bond and covenant of Quraysh might do so. So Khuza'ah leapt up and said: "We are with the bond and covenant of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." And Banu Bakr leapt up and said: "We are in the bond and covenant of Quraysh." And that you shall return from us this year, and not enter Mecca upon us; and that when the following year comes, we shall withdraw from you, and you shall enter it with your companions and stay among them for three days, with you the weapon of the rider — you shall not enter it except with swords in their sheaths. While the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was writing the document, Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl ibn 'Amr came to him in irons, having escaped to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: And the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had set out having no doubt about the conquest, because of a vision the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had seen. So when they saw what they saw of the peace treaty and the withdrawal, and what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took upon himself, a great distress entered the people, until they nearly perished from it. When Suhayl saw Abu Jandal, he stood up to him and struck his face, then said: "O Muhammad, the matter has already been settled between me and you before this man came to you." He said: "You have spoken truly." So he went to him and seized him by the collar. Abu Jandal cried out at the top of his voice: "O assembly of Muslims, will you return me to the people of polytheism so that they persecute me in my religion?" He said: This increased the distress of the people beyond what they already had. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O Abu Jandal, be patient and seek reward, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will surely provide relief and a way out for you and for the oppressed with you. We have made a covenant between us and this people, and we gave them our word upon it, and they gave us a covenant upon it, and we shall not betray them." He said: Then 'Umar ibn al-Khattab jumped up to him along with Abu Jandal and walked beside him saying: "Be patient, Abu Jandal, for they are nothing but polytheists, and the blood of one of them is but the blood of a dog." He said: And he brought the hilt of his sword close to him. He said: he meant, I hoped he would take the sword and strike his father with it. He said: But the man was too attached to his father, and the matter was carried through. When they had finished with the document — and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to pray in the sacred area while his camp was pitched in the area outside the sanctuary — the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up and said: "O people, slaughter your sacrificial animals and shave your heads." He said: But no one got up. He said: Then he repeated it likewise, and no man got up; until he repeated it a third time likewise, and no man got up. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went back and entered upon Umm Salama and said: "O Umm Salama, what is the matter with the people?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah, what has befallen them is what you have seen; so do not speak to any of them, and go to your sacrificial animal wherever it is, and slaughter it, and shave your head. If you do that, the people will do it." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out without speaking to anyone, until he came to his sacrificial animal and slaughtered it, then sat down and shaved his head. Then the people got up, slaughtering and shaving. He said: Until, when he was between Mecca and Medina, in the middle of the road, Surat al-Fath was revealed.
