حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ عَنْ ضَمْرَةَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ عَنْ شَدَّادِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْكَيِّسُ مَنْ دَانَ نَفْسَهُ وَعَمِلَ لِمَا بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ وَالْعَاجِزُ مَنْ أَتْبَعَ نَفْسَهُ هَوَاهَا وَتَمَنَّى عَلَى اللَّهِ.

Ali ibn Ishaq narrated to us, he said: Abdullah, meaning Ibn al-Mubarak, informed us, he said: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Maryam informed us, from Damra ibn Habib, from Shaddad ibn Aws, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The shrewd one is he who holds himself to account and works for what comes after death, and the incapable one is he who follows his own desire and wishes upon Allah.
