Rawh narrated to us, he said: al-Awza'i narrated to us from Hassan ibn Atiyyah, who said: Shaddad ibn Aws was on a journey and he stopped at a place, and he said to his servant boy: Bring us the blade, let us play with it. I disapproved of that, so he said: I have not spoken a word since I embraced Islam except that I have bridled and restrained it, except this word of mine - so do not hold it against me, but remember from me what I say to you: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: When people hoard gold and silver, then hoard these words: O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in the matter, and resolve upon right guidance, and I ask You for gratitude for Your blessing, and I ask You for the goodness of Your worship, and I ask You for a sound heart, and I ask You for a truthful tongue, and I ask You for the best of what You know, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know; indeed You are the Knower of the unseen.
