He said: Ya'qub told us: my father told us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr told me, from a son of Abdullah ibn Unays, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called me and said, 'It has reached me that Khalid ibn Sufyan ibn Nubayh is gathering people to attack me, and he is at Uranah. Go to him and kill him.' He said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, describe him to me so that I may recognize him.' He said, 'When you see him, you will feel a shiver run through you.' He said: So I went out wrapped in my sword, until I came upon him at Uranah, together with some traveling women for whom he was seeking a place to camp, and it was the time of the Asr prayer. When I saw him, I felt the shiver that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had described to me. So I approached him, and I feared that a struggle might arise between us that would keep me from prayer, so I prayed while walking toward him, gesturing with my head for bowing and prostration. When I reached him, he said, 'Who is the man?' I said, 'A man from the Arabs who heard of you and of your gathering people against this man, and has come to you for that purpose.' He said, 'Yes, I am indeed engaged in that.' He said: So I walked with him a while, until, when the opportunity arose, I struck him with the sword until I killed him. Then I left, leaving his womenfolk collapsed over him. When I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he saw me and said, 'The face has prospered.' I said, 'I have killed him, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'You have spoken the truth.' He said: Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, rose with me and went into his house, and gave me a staff, and said, 'Keep this with you, O Abdullah ibn Unays.' He said: So I went out with it among the people, and they said, 'What is this staff?' I said, 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave it to me and commanded me to keep it.' They said, 'Will you not go back to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and ask him about that?' He said: So I went back to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, why did you give me this staff?' He said, 'As a sign between me and you on the Day of Resurrection; indeed the fewest of the people who will carry a staff on that Day, the Day of Resurrection, [will be so honored].' So Abdullah kept it joined together with his sword, and it stayed with him until, when he died, he ordered that it be placed with him in his shroud, and so the two were buried together. He said: Yahya ibn Adam told us: Ibn Idris told us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr, from one of the sons of Abdullah ibn Unays, from Abu Abdullah ibn Unays, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent him to Khalid ibn Sufyan ibn Nubayh al-Hudhali to kill him, for he was gathering men to fight the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: I came upon him at Uranah, while he was among his livestock, and the time of Asr had come, and I feared that a struggle might arise between us that would keep me from prayer. He said: So I prayed while walking, gesturing. When I reached him, I said such and such — and he related the hadith — then he came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him that he had killed him, and he related the hadith.
