Ya'qub narrated to me: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Ishaq: Mu'adh b. Abdullah b. Khubayb al-Juhani narrated to me, from his brother Abdullah b. Abdullah b. Khubayb, who said: There was a man in the time of Umar b. al-Khattab who had asked him for something and he had given him. He said: Abdullah b. Unays, Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sat with us in his gathering, in the gathering of Juhaynah — he said, in Ramadan — so we said to him, "O Abu Yahya, did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, concerning this blessed night?" He said, "Yes. We sat with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the latter part of this month, and we said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, when should we seek this blessed night?' He said, 'Seek it this night' — and that was the evening of the twenty-third night." A man among the group said to him, "Is it then, O Messenger of Allah, the first of eight remaining nights?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "It is not the first of eight, but the first of the seven remaining; for the month is not complete."
