Abd al-Razzaq told us, Ma'mar told us: Abd al-Aziz ibn Umar informed me, from al-Rabi ibn Sabrah, from his father, who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, from Medina on the Farewell Pilgrimage, until, when we were at Usfan, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "The Umrah has now been incorporated into the Hajj." Then Suraqah ibn Malik — or Malik ibn Suraqah, Abd al-Aziz was uncertain which — said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, teach us as one teaches a people newly born today; is this Umrah of ours for this year only, or forever?" He said, "No, rather forever." So when we arrived at Mecca, we circled the House and went between Safa and Marwah, and then he commanded us to contract temporary marriages with women. So we went back to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, they refuse unless a fixed term is set." He said, "Then do so." He said: So I went out, I and a companion of mine, I wearing a cloak and he wearing a cloak, and we came to a woman and offered ourselves to her. She kept looking at my companion's cloak and found it finer than mine, and looked at me and found me more youthful than him. So she said, "A cloak for a cloak," and chose me, so I married her for ten [days] with my cloak, and I spent that night with her. When morning came, I went early to the mosque, and I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the pulpit, delivering a sermon, saying: "Whoever among you has married a woman for a fixed term, let him give her what he stipulated for her, and let him not take back anything he gave her, and let him separate from her, for Allah, Exalted is He, has now forbidden it until the Day of Resurrection."
