Sulayman ibn Dawud told us, Isma'il told us, who said: Humayd told me, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed between Khaybar and Madinah for three days consummating his marriage with Safiyyah bint Huyayy. I then invited the Muslims to his wedding feast, and there was in it neither bread nor meat — he ordered leather mats to be spread, and dates, dried curd, and clarified butter were placed on them, and that was his wedding feast. The Muslims said: "Is she one of the Mothers of the Believers, or one of those his right hand possesses?" They said: "If he veils her, she is one of the Mothers of the Believers, and if he does not veil her, she is one of those his right hand possesses." When he set off to travel, he made a place for her behind him and drew the curtain between her and the people.
