'Affan narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, Thabit narrated to us, from Anas ibn Malik: that the Jews, when a woman among them menstruated, would put her out of the house, not eat with her, nor have relations with her. The Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked about that, so Allah, Mighty and Sublime, revealed: "And they ask you about menstruation. Say: it is harmful, so keep away from women during menstruation"—until He finished the verse. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded them to do everything with their wives except intercourse. The Jews said, "This man does not want to leave anything of our practice without opposing us in it." Then 'Abbad ibn Bishr and Usayd ibn Hudayr came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, the Jews have said such and such—shall we not then have relations with them?" The face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, changed color, until we thought he was displeased with them, so they left him. Then a gift of milk for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, met them on the way, so he sent after them and gave them to drink from it, and we realized then that he was not displeased with them.
