Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated from Abd al-Razzaq, from al-Thawri, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from Alqamah or al-Aswad that a man came to Ibn Mas'ud and said: 'There was a dispute between me and my wife, as happens between people. She said: If the authority you hold over my affairs were in my hands, I would know what to do. He said: Then the authority over your affairs is in your hands. She said: Then you are divorced three times.' He said: 'I consider it one divorce, and you have more right to take her back.' He said: 'I will meet the Commander of the Faithful Umar.' He met him and told him the story. Umar said: 'May Allah do this and that to the men who take what Allah has placed in their hands and put it in the hands of women! Dirt in her mouth! What did you say?' He said: 'I said it counts as one and he has more right to her.' He said: 'I see the same, and had you ruled otherwise, I would have considered you wrong.' Mansur said: I said to Ibrahim: 'But Ibn Abbas used to say: May Allah thwart her! Had she said: I have divorced myself...' Ibrahim said: 'They are the same.'
