Zayd ibn Wahb said: We came to Ibn Mas'ud and found him praying, so we waited until he finished. Two men came who had differed about a verse. One recited it and Abdullah said: 'Well done. Who taught you?' He said: 'Abu Hakim al-Muzani taught me.' He asked the other to recite and said: 'Who taught you?' He said: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab.' Abdullah wept until his tears soaked the pebbles. Then he said: 'Recite as Umar taught you.' Then he drew a circle with his hand and said: 'Umar was an impregnable fortress for Islam - people would enter through it and not leave. When Umar died, the fortress was breached, so people leave it and do not enter.'
