The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to 'Abdullah (who was praying) with Abu Bakr and 'Umar on either side. 'Abdullah had begun reciting Surah al-Nisa' and recited it fluently. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever loves to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite the recitation of Ibn Umm 'Abd." Then 'Abdullah sat and supplicated, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) kept saying: "Ask and you shall be given, ask and you shall be given." Among what he asked was: "O Allah, I ask You for faith that does not waver, bliss that does not perish, and the companionship of Your Prophet (peace be upon him) in the Paradise of Eternity." 'Umar came to give 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud the glad tidings but found Abu Bakr already leaving, having preceded him. He said: "If you did so, you have always been foremost in good deeds."
