Abu Umamah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out and passed by the house of 'Uthman ibn Maz'un. He stood at the door and said: "What is the matter with you, O Kuhaylah, looking disheveled - is 'Uthman not present?" She said: "Yes, but he has not lain on his bed for such-and-such a time, and he fasts every day without breaking his fast." He said: "Tell him to come to me." When 'Uthman came, she told him, and he went to the Prophet and found him in the mosque. He sat beside him but the Prophet turned away from him, so he wept and said: "I know something has reached you about me." The Prophet said: "Are you the one who fasts every day and stands in prayer all night without laying your side on a bed?" 'Uthman said: "I did that seeking goodness." The Prophet said: "Your eyes have a right, your body has a right, and your wife has a right. So fast and break your fast, sleep and stand in prayer, and go to your wife. For I fast and break my fast, I sleep and stand in prayer, and I go to women. Whoever follows my way is guided, and whoever abandons it is astray. For every deed there is an eagerness, and for every eagerness there is a slackening. If the slackening leads to negligence, that is destruction. But if the slackening leads (back) to the obligatory acts, it will not harm its doer. So take from deeds what you can bear, and do not make your worship of your Lord burdensome - you do not know how long your life will be."
