Abu Umamah said: When it was the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up - and on that day he had al-Fadl ibn 'Abbas riding behind him on a camel - and said: "O people, take from knowledge before it is taken away and before it is raised up." Allah had already revealed: 'O you who believe, do not ask about things that, if made known to you, would distress you.' We used to mention this verse often, and it prevented us from asking him. So we went to a bedouin and bribed him with a garment. He wrapped it around his head until I could see the edge of the garment over his right eyebrow. Then we said: 'Ask the Prophet.' He said: 'O Prophet of Allah, how will knowledge be raised from us when we have the scriptures among us - we have learned from them and taught them to our women, children, and servants?' The Prophet raised his head, and redness had risen in his face from anger, and he said: 'May your mother lose you! These Jews and Christians have scriptures among them, yet they did not hold on to a single letter of what their prophets brought them. Indeed, the departure of knowledge is the departure of its people' - three times."
