Suraqah narrated a detailed account of pursuing the Prophet (peace be upon him) during the Hijrah: "When the Messenger of Allah left Makkah emigrating to Madinah, the Quraysh offered a hundred she-camels for whoever brought him back. While I was sitting in a gathering of my people, a man came and said: 'By Allah, I saw a group of three riders pass by me just now. I think it is Muhammad.' I gestured to him to be quiet and said: 'They are just so-and-so looking for their lost animal.' Then I slipped away, ordered my horse to be brought, took out my weapons from behind my room, took my divination arrows, put on my armor, drew my arrows and cast lots — the result came that I disliked: 'Do not harm him.' But I hoped to catch him and claim the hundred she-camels. I rode in pursuit. While my horse was galloping, it stumbled and I fell. I drew the arrows again and got the same result. But I refused and rode on. When I came close and could see them, my horse stumbled again and its front legs sank into the ground. I fell off, then urged it up. When it pulled its legs out, smoke rose up like a pillar. I then knew he was protected from me and would prevail. I called out: 'Wait for me! By Allah, I will not harm you and nothing you dislike will come from you through me.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Tell him what does he want?' I said: 'Write me a document between me and you as a sign.' He said: 'Write it, O Abu Bakr.' He wrote it for me and threw it to me. I went back and kept silent, mentioning nothing of what happened until Allah opened Makkah for His Messenger and he finished with the people of Hunayn. I went out to the Messenger of Allah with the document. While I was heading toward him, I entered between a battalion of the Ansar. They began striking me with their spears, saying: 'Away! Away!' until I drew close to the Messenger of Allah on his she-camel. I could see his legs in the stirrups, like the white heart of a palm trunk. I held out the document and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, this is your document.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'Today is a day of faithfulness and righteousness. Come close.' And I accepted Islam."
