Sahl ibn Sa'd said: I was among the people in the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him) when a woman came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have offered myself to you, so give your opinion regarding me." A man stood up and said: "Marry me to her, O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need of her." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) remained silent. She stood up again and said the same thing, and the man said: "Marry me to her, O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need of her." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to the man: "Do you have anything to give her?" He said: "No." He said: "Go and look for something." He went and came back and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I found nothing." He said: "Go and look, even for an iron ring." He went and came back and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I found nothing, not even an iron ring." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Do you know anything of the Quran?" He said: "Yes, Surah such-and-such and Surah such-and-such." He said: "Go, for I have married her to you for what you know of the Quran."
