Zamrah ibn Habib said: When we conquered Cyprus, Abu al-Darda' sat and wept. Jubair ibn Nufayr said to him: "You weep on a day when Allah has honored Islam and its people?" Abu al-Darda' said: "Woe to you, O Jubair! How insignificant are the people in the sight of Allah when they abandon His command! They were a nation with dominion and power — they abandoned the command of Allah, and look at what has happened to them."
