Zayd ibn Arqam said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent me to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and I gave him glad tidings of Paradise. Then he sent me to 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and I gave him glad tidings of Paradise. Then he sent me to 'Uthman and I gave him glad tidings of Paradise, along with a trial that would befall him. 'Uthman took my hand and went with me to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is this trial that will befall me? By Allah, I have never sung, nor wished (for evil), nor touched my private part with my right hand since I accepted Islam — or since I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah — nor have I committed fornication in either the pre-Islamic period or in Islam." He said: "Indeed, Allah will clothe you with a garment (the caliphate). If the hypocrites want you to remove it, do not remove it."
