Rafi' ibn Khadij said: While we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) at Dhu al-Hulayfah in Tihamah, and the people were hungry, they obtained sheep and camels. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was at the rear of the people. They hurried and slaughtered, setting up the pots. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came and ordered the pots overturned. Then he divided: he equalized ten sheep for one camel. There was a camel in the group that ran away. They chased it but could not catch it. A man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed these beasts have wild characteristics like those of wild animals. Whatever escapes from you, do the same to it." We said: "We fear — or hope — to meet the enemy tomorrow, and we have no knives. Shall we slaughter with reeds?" He said: "Whatever causes the blood to flow and over which Allah's Name is mentioned — eat from it, except the tooth and the nail. I will tell you about that: the tooth is a bone, and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians."
