Rafi' ibn Khadij said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) at Dhu al-Hulayfah when people obtained camels and sheep. They hurried and set up the cooking pots. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came and ordered the pots to be overturned. Then he equalized: ten sheep for one camel. A camel ran away, and they chased it but could not catch it. A man shot it with an arrow and stopped it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "These animals have wild characteristics like wild animals. Whatever escapes from you, treat it like this." Then we said: "We fear — or hope — to meet the enemy tomorrow, and we have no knives. Can we slaughter with reeds?" He said: "Whatever causes the blood to flow and over which Allah's Name is mentioned — eat from it, but not (with) a tooth or a nail. I will tell you about that: the tooth is a bone, and the nail is the knife of the Abyssinians."
