Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Abu Ayyub ibn Zayd al-Ansari, with whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had stayed when he migrated to Madinah, went on an expedition to the land of the Romans. He passed by Mu'awiyah who treated him coldly. He went on his expedition and returned, passing by him again, and Mu'awiyah treated him coldly and paid him no attention. He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told us that we would see selfishness after him." Mu'awiyah said: What did he command you? He said: He commanded us to be patient. He said: Then be patient. He then came to Abdullah ibn Abbas in Basrah, whom Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had appointed over it. He said: O Abu Ayyub, I want to vacate my dwelling for you, as you did for the Messenger of Allah. He ordered his family out and gave him everything the house contained. When he was departing, he said: What do you need? He said: My stipend and eight slaves to work my land. His stipend was four thousand, so he multiplied it five times and gave him twenty thousand and forty slaves.
