'Urwah narrated: When Allah opened Khaybar for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and killed those who were killed among them, Zaynab bint al-Harith the Jewess - she was the niece of Marhab - gifted a roasted sheep and poisoned it, putting extra poison in the shoulder and foreleg when she was told that those were the favorite parts of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). When the Messenger of Allah entered, and with him was Bishr ibn al-Bara' ibn Ma'rur of Banu Salimah, she placed it before the Messenger of Allah. He took the shoulder and foreleg and tore off a piece of meat, and Bishr took another bone and tore off a piece. When the Messenger of Allah chewed his morsel, Bishr swallowed what was in his mouth. The Messenger of Allah said: "Lift your hands, for the shoulder of this sheep tells me that it has been poisoned." Bishr ibn al-Bara' said: "By the One who honored you, I found that in the morsel I ate, but nothing prevented me from spitting it out except that I did not want to spoil your meal. When you swallowed what was in your mouth, I did not wish to preserve my life over yours, and I hoped you had not swallowed any of the poison." Bishr did not rise from his place before his color turned like that of a green shawl. His pain lingered until he could not move except when moved. The Messenger of Allah lived three more years after that until the illness in which he died.
