Ibn Abbas narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made a settlement with the people of Khaybar for all gold and silver and everything except their lives and their families. He said that al-Rabi' and Kinanah, the sons of Abu al-Huqayq, were brought — one of them was the bridegroom of Safiyyah bint Huyayy. He said: 'Where are your vessels that used to be borrowed for weddings in Madinah?' They said: 'You expelled us and drove us out, so we spent them.' He said: 'Look at what you are saying, for if you conceal anything from me, I will consider your blood and your families lawful.' He then called two men from the Ansar and said: 'Go to such-and-such a place and look for a palm tree with a patch on top. Remove that patch and extract those vessels and bring them to me.' They went and brought them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then brought them forward and had their necks struck. He sent for their families, and Safiyyah was brought while she was a bride. He ordered Bilal to take her to the dwelling of the Messenger of Allah. Bilal took her past her husband and his brother who were slain. When he returned to the Messenger of Allah, he said: 'Glory be to Allah! What did you intend, O Bilal, taking a young virgin past two slain men, showing them to her? Have you no mercy?' Bilal said: 'I intended to make her heart burn.' The Messenger of Allah entered and spent the night with her. Abu Ayyub came with his sword and sat beside the tent. He said: 'If I hear something alarming or anything suspicious, I will be near the Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah came out for Bilal's call to prayer and said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'I am Abu Ayyub.' He said: 'What are you doing here at this hour?' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you consummated your marriage with a young virgin after killing her husband and her brother. I was concerned for you and wanted to be near the Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'May Allah have mercy on you, O Abu Ayyub' — three times. The people differed about her: some said she was his concubine and others said she was his wife. When it was time to depart, they said: 'Watch the Messenger of Allah. If he veils her, she is his wife, and if he does not veil her, she is his concubine.' The Messenger of Allah brought her out and veiled her. He placed his knee for her and said: 'Mount.' She honored the Messenger of Allah by not placing her foot on his knee and instead placed her knee on his thigh and mounted. He had offered her beforehand the choice of being his concubine or being freed and married to him. She said: 'No, rather free me and marry me.' So he did (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
