Ibn Abbas narrated that zihar in the pre-Islamic era used to make women permanently unlawful. The first person to make zihar in Islam was Aws ibn al-Salt, and his wife was Khuwaylah bint Khuwaylid. The man was weak, and the woman was strong. When he uttered the zihar, he said: 'I think you have become unlawful to me. Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); perhaps you will find something that will return you to me.' She went while he waited by the edge of the well. She came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) while a woman was combing his hair. She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, Aws ibn al-Samit — you know his weak-mindedness and inability. He has made zihar against me, O Messenger of Allah. I am the most deserving to be kind to him if there is good with me, or he is the most deserving of kindness from me if there is good with him. He has made zihar against me, O Messenger of Allah, so find something that will return me to him, by my father and mother.' He said: 'O Khuwaylah, we have not been commanded concerning your matter. If we are commanded, I will inform you.' While the woman combing his hair had finished one side and began the other, Allah the Exalted revealed — and when revelation came to him, his face would become dark until he felt its coolness, and when it was lifted, his face would return white as a heart — then he spoke with what he was commanded. The woman combing his hair said: 'O Khuwaylah, I think it is now about your matter.' She was seized by trembling, then she said: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You that You only reveal good concerning me, for I sought nothing from Your Messenger except good.' When the revelation was lifted, he said: 'O Khuwaylah, Allah has revealed concerning you and your companion: Allah has heard the speech of the one who argues with you concerning her husband, up to His saying: then those who return to what they said — then the freeing of a slave before they touch each other.' She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, he has no servant other than me, and I have no servant other than him.' He said: 'Then fasting for two consecutive months.' She said: 'By Allah, if he does not eat twice a day, his eyesight becomes dim.' He said: 'Then feeding sixty poor people.' She said: 'By Allah, we have nothing today but a small measure.' He said: 'Then tell him to go to such-and-such person and take from him half a wasq of dates and give it in charity to sixty poor people, and let him take you back.' She said: 'I came, and when he saw me he said: What happened?' She said: 'Good news, though you are blameworthy. You have been ordered to go to such-and-such person, take from him half a wasq of dates, give it in charity to sixty poor people, and take me back.' He went running until he brought it back. She said: 'Before that, I knew him to be unable to carry five sa's on his back due to his weakness.'
