Ibn Abbas narrated that Huyayy ibn Akhtab and Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf came to Makkah to the Quraysh and allied with them against the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). They said to them: 'You are the people of ancient knowledge and the people of the Book. Tell us about us and about Muhammad.' They said: 'What are you and what is Muhammad?' They said: 'We slaughter fine she-camels, give milk mixed with water, free captives, give drink to the pilgrims, and maintain ties of kinship.' They said: 'And what is Muhammad?' They said: 'A rootless outcast who has cut off our kinship ties and is followed by the thieves of the pilgrims, the Banu Ghifar.' They said: 'Rather, you are better than him and more guided in path.' So Allah the Exalted revealed: 'Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book, who believe in superstition and false deities,' to the end of the verse.
