Ibn Abbas narrated: Najdah wrote to Ibn Abbas asking about an orphan — when does the orphanhood end, about killing children, about whether a slave has a share of the spoils, and about the khums — for whom is it? Ibn Abbas said: 'Were it not that he might do something foolish, I would not have written to him.' Then he wrote: 'As for the orphan, when he reaches puberty and soundness of judgment is recognized, his orphanhood has ended. As for children, if you know about them what al-Khidr knew, then do so, otherwise do not kill them. As for the slave, he used to be given a gift. As for women, they used to tend the wounded and serve water. As for the khums, we claim it is for us, but our people claim it is not for us.'
