Zahdam al-Jarmi said: "We were in the evening gathering of Ibn Abbas when he said: 'I will tell you a narration that is neither secret nor public. When what happened to this man — meaning 'Uthman — happened, I said to 'Ali: Withdraw, for even if you were in a hole, you would be sought out and brought forth. But he disobeyed me. By Allah, Mu'awiyah will surely rule over you, for Allah the Almighty says: {And whoever is killed unjustly, We have given his heir authority, so let him not exceed in killing. Indeed, he is supported.} And Quraysh will impose upon you the ways of Persia and Rome, and the Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians will lord it over you. Whoever among you holds on to what he knows will be saved, and whoever abandons it — and you will abandon it — will be like a generation of those who perished.'"
