Hadrat Anas (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated: Abu Talhah proposed to Umm Sulaym. She said: "A man like you, O Abu Talhah, is not to be refused, but I am a Muslim woman and you are a disbelieving man. It is not permissible for me to marry you. If you accept Islam, that shall be my dowry and I ask for nothing else." He accepted Islam and that became her dowry. He consummated the marriage and she conceived and bore a handsome boy whom Abu Talhah loved deeply. The child lived until he could move about, then fell ill. Abu Talhah grieved intensely. While he was out visiting the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), the boy died. Umm Sulaym perfumed and cleaned him and placed him in a room. When Abu Talhah came and asked about the boy, she said: "He is calmer tonight than he has been since he fell ill." He praised Allah and was glad. She served him dinner. Then she adorned herself and he was intimate with her. Afterward she said: "O Abu Talhah, if a neighbor lent you something and you benefited from it, then he wanted it back, would you return it?" He said: "Yes, by Allah, I would." She said: "Willingly?" He said: "Willingly." She said: "Allah lent you your son, let you enjoy him as He willed, then took him back. So be patient and seek reward." He said 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' and was patient. In the morning, he went to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and told him what Umm Sulaym had done. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "May Allah bless you both in your night." She conceived from that night, and when she gave birth, the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) told Abu Talhah: "When Umm Sulaym gives birth, bring the child to me." Abu Talhah carried the baby in a cloth to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He chewed a date and placed it in the baby's mouth, and the baby began licking it. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said to Abu Talhah: "The Ansar love dates!" He softened the date in the baby's mouth, blessed him, supplicated for him, and named him Abdullah.

حضرت انس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے: ابو طلحہ نے اُمّ سلیم کو نکاح کا پیغام دیا۔ انہوں نے کہا: اے ابو طلحہ، تم جیسے شخص کو رد نہیں کیا جاتا، لیکن میں مسلمان عورت ہوں اور تم کافر مرد ہو، تمہارے ساتھ نکاح جائز نہیں۔ اگر تم مسلمان ہو جاؤ تو یہی میرا مہر ہے اور اس کے سوا کچھ نہیں مانگتی۔ وہ مسلمان ہو گئے اور یہی ان کا مہر تھا۔ رخصتی ہوئی اور ایک خوبصورت لڑکا پیدا ہوا جسے ابو طلحہ بہت چاہتے تھے۔ وہ بڑا ہوا اور چلنے لگا پھر بیمار ہو گیا۔ ابو طلحہ بہت غمگین ہوئے۔ ابو طلحہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس گئے اور بچہ مر گیا۔ اُمّ سلیم نے اسے خوشبو لگائی، صاف کیا اور کمرے میں رکھ دیا۔ جب ابو طلحہ آئے اور بچے کے بارے میں پوچھا تو کہا: جب سے بیمار ہوا ہے آج رات سب سے زیادہ سکون میں ہے۔ انہوں نے اللہ کا شکر ادا کیا اور خوش ہوئے۔ انہوں نے رات کا کھانا پیش کیا، کھانا کھایا۔ پھر خوشبو لگائی اور آمادہ ہوئیں یہاں تک کہ ابو طلحہ ان سے ہم بستر ہوئے۔ کھانا اور صحبت کے بعد کہا: اے ابو طلحہ، بتاؤ اگر کسی پڑوسی نے تمہیں کوئی چیز عاریتاً دی اور تم نے فائدہ اٹھایا، پھر وہ واپس مانگے تو کیا تم واپس کرو گے؟ کہا: ہاں اللہ کی قسم، واپس کروں گا۔ کہا: خوشدلی سے؟ کہا: خوشدلی سے۔ کہا: اللہ نے تمہیں بیٹا عاریتاً دیا اور جب تک چاہا اس سے فائدہ اٹھانے دیا، پھر واپس لے لیا — صبر کرو اور ثواب کی امید رکھو۔ ابو طلحہ نے انا للہ وانا الیہ راجعون پڑھا اور صبر کیا۔ صبح رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس گئے اور اُمّ سلیم کا قصہ بتایا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «اللہ تم دونوں کو تمہاری رات میں برکت دے۔» اسی رات سے حمل ٹھہرا، اور جب ولادت ہوئی تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ابو طلحہ سے فرمایا: «جب اُمّ سلیم کا بچہ ہو تو میرے پاس لانا۔» ابو طلحہ نے بچے کو کپڑے میں لپیٹ کر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس لے آئے۔ آپ نے کھجور چبائی اور بچے کے منہ میں ڈالی، بچہ چاٹنے لگا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ابو طلحہ سے فرمایا: «انصار کو کھجوریں محبوب ہیں!» آپ نے بچے کی تالو پر کھجور لگائی، دعا دی اور نام عبداللہ رکھا۔
