Hadrat Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated: The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) set out, and I was with him, until we entered the synagogue of the Jews in Madinah on their festival day. They disliked our entering upon them. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "O community of Jews, show me twelve men who will bear witness that there is no deity but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. Allah will remove from every Jew under the canopy of the sky the anger He has directed at him." They remained silent and not one of them answered. He repeated it and none answered. He stated it a third time and none answered. He stated: "You have refused. By Allah, I am indeed the Gatherer, the Last, and the Successor — whether you believe or deny." He turned to leave, and I was with him, when a man from behind us said: "Wait, O Muhammad!" That man then asked: "O community of Jews, what kind of man do you know me to be among you?" They said: "We know of no one among us more learned in the Book of Allah nor more knowledgeable in jurisprudence than you, nor your father before you, nor your grandfather before your father." He said: "Then I bear witness by Allah that he is the Prophet of Allah whom you find mentioned in the Torah." They said: "You lie!" and spoke ill of him. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "You lie. Your words will never be accepted. Just now you praised him with the best praise, but when he believed, you called him a liar and spoke ill of him. Your words shall never be accepted." We left as three: the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), myself, and Abdullah ibn Salam. And Allah revealed concerning him: {Say: Have you considered — if it is from Allah and you disbelieve in it...} (46:10).

حضرت عوف بن مالک اشجعی رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے: نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نکلے اور میں آپ کے ساتھ تھا، یہاں تک کہ ہم مدینہ میں یہود کی عبادت گاہ میں ان کے تہوار کے دن داخل ہوئے۔ انہیں ہمارا آنا ناگوار لگا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «اے یہود کی جماعت، مجھے بارہ آدمی دکھاؤ جو گواہی دیں کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں اور میں اللہ کا رسول ہوں، تو اللہ آسمان کے نیچے ہر یہودی سے وہ غضب دور کر دے گا جو اس پر نازل ہوا ہے۔» وہ خاموش رہے اور کسی نے جواب نہیں دیا۔ آپ نے دوبارہ فرمایا تو کسی نے جواب نہیں دیا۔ تیسری بار فرمایا تو کسی نے جواب نہیں دیا۔ آپ نے فرمایا: «تم نے انکار کر دیا۔ اللہ کی قسم، بے شک میں ہی حاشر ہوں، اور عاقب ہوں، اور مقفّی ہوں — چاہے تم مانو یا جھٹلاؤ۔» پھر آپ واپس مڑے اور میں ساتھ تھا، جب قریب تھا کہ باہر نکلیں تو پیچھے سے ایک شخص نے آواز دی: ٹھہرو، اے محمد! اس شخص نے یہود سے کہا: اے یہود کی جماعت، تم میں مجھے کیسا آدمی جانتے ہو؟ انہوں نے کہا: ہم نہیں جانتے کہ ہم میں تم سے، تمہارے باپ سے یا تمہارے دادا سے زیادہ اللہ کی کتاب کا عالم اور فقیہ کوئی تھا۔ اس نے کہا: تو میں اللہ کی قسم اس کی گواہی دیتا ہوں کہ یہ اللہ کے نبی ہیں جنہیں تم تورات میں پاتے ہو۔ انہوں نے کہا: تو نے جھوٹ بولا اور اس سے بری باتیں کہیں۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «تم نے جھوٹ بولا۔ تمہاری بات ہرگز قبول نہیں ہوگی۔ ابھی تم اس کی بہترین تعریف کر رہے تھے لیکن جب اس نے ایمان لایا تو تم نے اسے جھٹلایا۔ تمہاری بات ہرگز قبول نہیں ہوگی۔» ہم تین نکلے: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم، میں، اور عبداللہ بن سلام۔ اللہ نے ان کے بارے میں نازل فرمایا: {کہو: بھلا بتاؤ اگر یہ اللہ کے پاس سے ہو اور تم اس کا انکار کرو...} (46:10)۔
