Hadrat Ali al-Murtada (may Allah ennoble his countenance) narrated while he was on the pulpit: "The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) sent me, Abu Marthad al-Sulami, and both of us were horsemen. He stated: 'Go until you reach the garden of Khakh, for there is a woman there carrying a letter from Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a to the polytheists. Bring it to me.' We found her on her camel at the place the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) had described. I said: 'Where is the letter you have?' She said: 'I have no letter.' So we made her camel kneel and searched her belongings. My companion said: 'I see nothing with her.' I said: 'You know well that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not lie. By the One by Whom oaths are sworn, you shall produce it or I shall search you with the sword.' When she saw the seriousness, she reached into her waistband — she was wearing a woolen garment — and brought out the letter. We brought it to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He stated: 'O Hatib, what made you do this?' Hatib submitted: 'O Messenger of Allah, it is not that I do not believe in Allah and His Messenger, but I wanted to have a favor with the people through which Allah would protect my family and wealth.' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'He has spoken the truth; say nothing but good about him.' Hadrat Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: 'O Messenger of Allah, he has betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. Let me strike his neck.' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'Is he not from the people of Badr? O Umar, what do you know — perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and stated: Do whatever you wish, for Paradise is guaranteed for you.' Then the eyes of Hadrat Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him) filled with tears and he said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.'"

حضرت علی المرتضیٰ کرّم اللہ تعالیٰ وجہہ الکریم نے منبر پر فرمایا: نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے مجھے اور ابو مرثد سلمی کو بھیجا اور ہم دونوں سوار تھے۔ آپ نے ارشاد فرمایا: «چلو یہاں تک کہ روضہ خاخ پہنچ جاؤ، وہاں ایک عورت ہے جس کے پاس حاطب بن ابی بلتعہ کا مشرکین کے نام خط ہے، مجھے لا کر دو۔» ہم نے اسے اس کے اونٹ پر اسی جگہ پایا جہاں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا تھا۔ میں نے کہا: تمہارے پاس جو خط ہے وہ کہاں ہے؟ اس نے کہا: میرے پاس کوئی خط نہیں۔ ہم نے اس کا اونٹ بٹھایا اور سامان تلاش کیا۔ میرے ساتھی نے کہا: اس کے پاس کچھ نظر نہیں آتا۔ میں نے کہا: تمہیں معلوم ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے جھوٹ نہیں فرمایا۔ اس ذات کی قسم جس کی قسم کھائی جاتی ہے، یا تو تم خط نکالو ورنہ میں تلوار سے تلاش کروں گا۔ جب اس نے سنجیدگی دیکھی تو اپنے ازار بند کی طرف ہاتھ بڑھایا — اس نے اونی لباس پہنا ہوا تھا — اور خط نکالا۔ ہم اسے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس لے آئے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: «اے حاطب، تم نے یہ کیوں کیا؟» انہوں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ، ایسا نہیں ہے کہ میں اللہ اور اس کے رسول پر ایمان نہیں رکھتا، لیکن میں چاہتا تھا کہ ان لوگوں کے پاس میرا احسان ہو جس سے اللہ میرے اہل و مال کی حفاظت فرمائے۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: «اس نے سچ کہا، اس کے بارے میں بھلائی ہی کہو۔» حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ، اس نے اللہ، اس کے رسول اور مؤمنین سے خیانت کی ہے، مجھے اجازت دیجئے کہ اس کی گردن ماروں۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: «کیا یہ اہل بدر میں سے نہیں؟ اے عمر تمہیں کیا معلوم، شاید اللہ نے اہل بدر پر نظر فرمائی اور فرمایا: جو چاہو کرو، تمہارے لیے جنت واجب ہو گئی ہے۔» تو حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کی آنکھوں میں آنسو آ گئے اور فرمایا: اللہ اور اس کا رسول بہتر جانتے ہیں۔
