Hadrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) narrated: I was always eager to ask Hadrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) about the two wives of the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) about whom Allah said: {If you two repent to Allah, for your hearts have deviated} — until Umar went for Hajj and I went with him. When he was on part of the road, he turned aside to relieve himself and I turned with him carrying the water vessel. He relieved himself, then came to me and I poured water on his hands for ablution. I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, who were the two wives of the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) about whom Allah said: {If you two repent to Allah, for your hearts have deviated}?" Umar said: "How astonishing of you, O Ibn Abbas!" Then he said: "They were Aisha and Hafsah." Then he began to narrate the hadith and said: We, the Quraysh, were a people who dominated our women. When we came to Madinah, we found a people whose women dominated them, and our women began to learn from their women. He said: I became angry one day with my wife, and she argued back with me. I objected to her arguing back, and she said: "Why do you object to my arguing back? By Allah, the wives of the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) argue back with him, and one of them may forsake him from day until night." He said: So I went and entered upon Hafsah and said: "Do you argue back with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)?" She said: "Yes, and one of us may forsake him from day until night." He said: "You have said it — she who does that among you is at a loss and ruined. Does one of you feel safe that Allah may become angry with her because of the anger of His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and then she would be destroyed? Do not argue back with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and do not ask him for anything. Ask me for whatever you need. And do not be deceived if your co-wife is more beautiful and more beloved to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) than you" — meaning Aisha. حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت ہے: میں ہمیشہ حضرت عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی ان دو بیویوں کے بارے میں پوچھنے کا حریص رہا جن کے بارے میں اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا: {اگر تم دونوں اللہ کی طرف توبہ کرو تو تمہارے دل جھک گئے ہیں} — یہاں تک کہ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ حج کو گئے اور میں بھی ان کے ساتھ گیا۔ جب راستے میں تھے تو وہ قضائے حاجت کے لیے ایک طرف ہوئے اور میں بھی پانی کا برتن لے کر ان کے ساتھ ہوا۔ انہوں نے قضائے حاجت کی پھر میرے پاس آئے تو میں نے ان کے ہاتھوں پر پانی ڈالا جس سے انہوں نے وضو کیا۔ میں نے عرض کیا: اے امیر المومنین! نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی وہ دو بیویاں کون تھیں جن کے بارے میں اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا: {اگر تم دونوں اللہ کی طرف توبہ کرو تو تمہارے دل جھک گئے ہیں}؟ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا: ابن عباس! تمہیں تعجب ہے! پھر فرمایا: وہ عائشہ اور حفصہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما تھیں۔ پھر حدیث بیان کرنے لگے: ہم قریش کے لوگ اپنی عورتوں پر غالب رہتے تھے، جب ہم مدینہ آئے تو ایسے لوگ پائے جن پر ان کی عورتیں غالب رہتی تھیں، تو ہماری عورتیں ان کی عورتوں سے سیکھنے لگیں۔ ایک دن میں اپنی بیوی پر ناراض ہوا تو وہ مجھ سے بحث کرنے لگی۔ میں نے اس کی بحث پر اعتراض کیا تو اس نے کہا: تم کیوں اعتراض کرتے ہو؟ اللہ کی قسم نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی بیویاں آپ سے بحث کرتی ہیں اور ان میں سے ایک دن سے رات تک آپ سے ناراض رہتی ہے۔ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا: میں حفصہ کے پاس گیا اور کہا: کیا تم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے بحث کرتی ہو؟ انہوں نے کہا: ہاں، اور ہم میں سے ایک دن سے رات تک آپ سے ناراض رہتی ہے۔ انہوں نے کہا: تم میں سے جو ایسا کرے وہ خائب و خاسر ہے۔ کیا تم میں سے کوئی اس بات سے مامون ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی ناراضگی کی وجہ سے اللہ تعالیٰ اس پر غضب فرمائے؟ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے بحث نہ کرو اور ان سے کچھ نہ مانگو، مجھ سے مانگو جو چاہو۔ اور اس دھوکے میں نہ آؤ اگر تمہاری سوکن زیادہ خوبصورت اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو تم سے زیادہ محبوب ہے — یعنی عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا۔ (طویل حدیث جاری ہے جس میں عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کا بالاخانے میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے ملنے اور دنیا کی نعمتوں کے بارے میں آپ کے ارشاد کا ذکر ہے۔)
