Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fought Muharib of Khasafah at Nakhl. They saw vulnerability among the Muslims, so a man from them called Awf ibn al-Harith or Ghawrath ibn al-Harith came and stood over the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with a sword and said: 'Who will protect you from me?' He said: 'Allah.' The sword fell from his hand. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took the sword and said: 'Who will protect you from me?' He said: 'Be better than I.' He said: 'Will you testify that there is no deity but Allah?' He said: 'No, but I covenant not to fight you nor be with people who fight you.' He let him go. He went to his companions and said: 'I came from the best of people.' At Zuhr or Asr - Abu Awanah doubted - the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded the prayer of fear. The people were two groups: one facing the enemy and one praying with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He prayed two rak'ahs with the group with him, then they withdrew and took the place of the others. Those came and prayed two rak'ahs with the Prophet (peace be upon him). Thus it was four rak'ahs for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and two rak'ahs for the people.
