Muhammad ibn Zafar al-Hafiz narrated to me - and I asked him - al-Husayn ibn Ayyash al-Qattan narrated to me, al-Husayn narrated to us, Yahya ibn Ayyash al-Qattan narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn Yahya al-Marwazi narrated to us, Ghalib ibn Hulays al-Kalbi Abu al-Haytham narrated to us, Juwayriya ibn Asma' narrated to us from Yahya ibn Sa'id, my uncle narrated to us who said: When the day of the Camel came, Hadrat Ali al-Murtada (may Allah ennoble his countenance) called out to the people: "Do not shoot anyone with an arrow, do not thrust with a spear, do not strike with a sword, and do not pursue the people, for this is a station in which whoever succeeds shall succeed on the Day of Resurrection." He said: So we stood facing each other. Then the people all cried out: "O avengers of Uthman!" And Ibn al-Hanafiyya was our leader on a hillock with the banner. Ali called to him, and he came towards us showing his face and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, they are saying 'O avengers of Uthman!'" Ali raised his hands and said: "O Allah, cast down the killers of Uthman today upon their faces." Then al-Zubayr said to the Persian archers who were with him: "Shoot them with a volley" - as though he wanted the fighting to commence. When his companions saw the engagement begin, they did not wait and charged. Allah routed them. Marwan ibn al-Hakam shot Hadrat Talha ibn Ubaydillah (may Allah be well pleased with him) with an arrow that pierced his leg into the side of his horse. The horse bolted until he caught up with him and slaughtered him. Marwan turned to Aban ibn Uthman, who was with him, and said: "I have spared you one of the killers of your father."

محمد بن ظفر حافظ نے مجھے بیان کیا اور میں نے ان سے سوال کیا، حسین بن عیاش قطان نے مجھے بیان کیا، حسین نے ہمیں بیان کیا، یحییٰ بن عیاش قطان نے ہمیں بیان کیا، حسین بن یحییٰ مروزی نے ہمیں بیان کیا، غالب بن حلیس کلبی ابو الہیثم نے ہمیں بیان کیا، جویریہ بن اسماء نے یحییٰ بن سعید سے، میرے چچا نے ہمیں بیان کیا، فرمایا: جب جنگ جمل کا دن آیا تو حضرت علی المرتضیٰ کرّم اللہ تعالیٰ وجہہ الکریم نے لوگوں میں پکارا: «کسی پر تیر نہ چلاؤ، کسی کو نیزہ نہ مارو، تلوار سے نہ مارو اور لوگوں کا پیچھا نہ کرو کیونکہ یہ وہ مقام ہے جس میں جو کامیاب ہوا وہ قیامت کے دن کامیاب ہوگا۔» ہم آمنے سامنے کھڑے ہوگئے۔ پھر سب لوگوں نے پکارا: اے عثمان کے خون کا بدلہ! اور ابن الحنفیہ ہمارے امام ایک ٹیلے پر جھنڈے کے ساتھ تھے۔ حضرت علی نے انہیں بلایا تو وہ ہماری طرف آئے اور عرض کیا: اے امیر المومنین! یہ لوگ یا ثارات عثمان پکار رہے ہیں۔ حضرت علی نے ہاتھ اٹھائے اور فرمایا: «اے اللہ! عثمان کے قاتلوں کو آج منہ کے بل گرا دے۔» پھر حضرت زبیر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے اپنے ساتھ فارسی تیراندازوں سے کہا: ان پر تیروں کی بوچھاڑ کرو، گویا وہ لڑائی شروع کرانا چاہتے تھے۔ جب ان کے ساتھیوں نے لڑائی شروع ہوتے دیکھی تو انتظار نہیں کیا اور حملہ کر دیا۔ اللہ نے انہیں شکست دی اور مروان بن الحکم نے حضرت طلحہ بن عبید اللہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ پر تیر مارا جو ان کی ٹانگ سے ان کے گھوڑے کے پہلو میں پیوست ہوگیا۔ گھوڑا بھاگا اور اس نے ان کو پکڑ کر ذبح کیا۔ مروان نے ابان بن عثمان کی طرف دیکھا جو اس کے ساتھ تھا اور کہا: میں نے تمہارے باپ کے ایک قاتل سے تمہیں بچا دیا۔
