Umm al-Mu'minin Hadrat Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be well pleased with her) narrates that the commencement of Divine Revelation to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was in the form of true dreams during sleep. He never saw a dream but that it came true like the brightness of dawn. Then seclusion became dear to him, and he would go to the Cave of Hira and worship there for several nights, taking provisions for that purpose, then returning to Umm al-Mu'minin Hadrat Khadijat al-Kubra (may Allah be well pleased with her) who would prepare more provisions for him. This continued until the Truth came to him while he was in the Cave of Hira. The angel came to him and said: 'Read!' The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared: 'I said: I am not one who reads. The angel seized me and pressed me so hard that I could barely bear it, then released me and said: Read! I said: I am not one who reads. He seized me a second time and pressed me until I could barely bear it, then released me and said: Read! I said: I am not one who reads. He seized me a third time and pressed me until I could barely bear it, then released me and said: Read in the Name of your Lord Who has created (96:1) — up to — that which he knew not (96:5).' He returned with these verses, his neck muscles trembling with fear. He came to Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her) and said: 'Cover me! Cover me!' They covered him until his fear subsided. Then he told Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her) the whole account and said: 'I feared for myself.' She submitted: 'Never! Receive glad tidings! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You maintain ties of kinship, speak the truth, bear the burdens of the weak, show hospitality to guests, and assist those afflicted in the cause of truth.' Then Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her) took him to Waraqa bin Nawfal bin Asad bin Abdul-Uzza bin Qusayy, her paternal cousin, who had embraced Christianity in the pre-Islamic period and used to write Arabic and would write from the Gospel in Arabic as much as Allah willed. He was an old man who had lost his eyesight. Hadrat Khadija (may Allah be well pleased with her) said to him: 'O cousin! Listen to your nephew.' Waraqa asked: 'O nephew! What have you seen?' The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) described what he had seen. Waraqa said: 'This is the same Namus (Hadrat Jibril, upon him be peace) who was sent to Musa (upon him be peace). Would that I were young and could live until the time when your people will drive you out.' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) asked: 'Will they drive me out?' Waraqa replied: 'Yes. No man has ever brought what you have brought without being treated with hostility. If I live to see your day, I will support you vigorously.' But shortly after that, Waraqa passed away and the Revelation paused for a period. Hadrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) said regarding 'Faliq al-Isbah' (6:96): it means the light of the sun during the day and the light of the moon at night.

حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین عائشہ صدیقہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم پر وحی کی ابتداء سچے خوابوں سے ہوئی جو آپ نیند میں دیکھتے تھے۔ آپ جو خواب بھی دیکھتے وہ صبح کی روشنی کی طرح ظاہر ہو جاتا۔ پھر آپ کو تنہائی محبوب ہوئی اور آپ غارِ حرا میں تشریف لے جاتے اور وہاں کئی راتیں عبادت فرماتے، اس کے لیے زادِ راہ ساتھ لے جاتے، پھر اُمّ المؤمنین حضرت خدیجۃ الکبریٰ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے پاس واپس تشریف لاتے اور وہ آپ کو مزید توشہ فراہم کر دیتیں۔ یہاں تک کہ آپ غارِ حرا میں تھے کہ اچانک حق تعالیٰ کی طرف سے وحی آئی۔ فرشتہ آپ کے پاس آیا اور کہا: پڑھیے۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: میں نے کہا میں پڑھا ہوا نہیں ہوں۔ فرشتے نے مجھے پکڑا اور اتنا بھینچا کہ مجھ پر سخت مشقت ہوئی، پھر چھوڑ دیا اور کہا: پڑھیے۔ میں نے کہا: میں پڑھا ہوا نہیں ہوں۔ فرشتے نے دوسری بار پکڑ کر بھینچا یہاں تک کہ مجھ پر سخت مشقت ہوئی، پھر چھوڑ دیا اور کہا: پڑھیے۔ میں نے کہا: میں پڑھا ہوا نہیں ہوں۔ تیسری بار پکڑ کر بھینچا یہاں تک کہ مجھ پر سخت مشقت ہوئی، پھر چھوڑ دیا اور کہا: «اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ» (پڑھیے اپنے رب کے نام سے جس نے پیدا کیا) یہاں تک کہ «مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ» تک۔ پھر آپ ان آیات کو لے کر واپس تشریف لائے اور آپ کے مونڈھوں کا گوشت خوف سے کانپ رہا تھا۔ حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے پاس پہنچ کر فرمایا: مجھے چادر اڑھا دو، مجھے چادر اڑھا دو۔ آپ کو چادر اڑھا دی گئی یہاں تک کہ خوف دور ہو گیا۔ پھر حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا سے سارا واقعہ بیان فرمایا اور ارشاد فرمایا: مجھے اپنی جان کی فکر ہوئی۔ حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا نے عرض کیا: ہرگز نہیں! خوشخبری قبول فرمائیے، اللہ کی قسم! اللہ تعالیٰ آپ کو ہرگز رسوا نہیں فرمائے گا۔ آپ تو صلۂ رحمی فرماتے ہیں، سچ بولتے ہیں، ناداروں کا بوجھ اٹھاتے ہیں، مہمان نوازی فرماتے ہیں اور حق کی راہ میں پیش آنے والی مصیبتوں میں مدد فرماتے ہیں۔ پھر حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا آپ کو ورقہ بن نوفل بن اسد بن عبدالعزیٰ بن قصی کے پاس لے گئیں جو حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے چچا زاد بھائی تھے۔ انہوں نے زمانۂ جاہلیت میں عیسائیت اختیار کر لی تھی اور عربی میں لکھتے تھے اور انجیل کا عربی ترجمہ لکھتے تھے جتنا اللہ تعالیٰ چاہتا۔ وہ بہت بوڑھے ہو چکے تھے اور نابینا ہو گئے تھے۔ حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین خدیجہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا نے ان سے کہا: بھائی! اپنے بھتیجے کی بات سنیے۔ ورقہ نے پوچھا: بھتیجے! تم نے کیا دیکھا؟ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے جو دیکھا تھا وہ سنایا۔ ورقہ نے کہا: یہ وہی ناموس (حضرت جبرائیل علیہ السلام) ہے جو حضرت موسیٰ علیہ السلام پر نازل ہوا تھا۔ کاش میں اس وقت جوان ہوتا اور زندہ رہتا جب آپ کی قوم آپ کو نکال دے گی۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے پوچھا: کیا یہ مجھے نکال دیں گے؟ ورقہ نے کہا: ہاں، جو بھی وہ پیغام لے کر آیا جو آپ لائے ہیں اس سے دشمنی کی گئی۔ اور اگر میں آپ کا وہ دن پا لوں تو آپ کی بھرپور مدد کروں گا۔ لیکن کچھ ہی عرصے بعد ورقہ کا انتقال ہو گیا اور وحی کا سلسلہ تھم گیا۔ حضرت عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے فرمایا کہ «فَالِقُ الإِصْبَاحِ» سے مراد دن میں سورج کی روشنی اور رات میں چاند کی روشنی ہے۔
